SLF LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT ALERT November 2007
USCIS Revises I-9 Form
On November 7, 2007, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (“USCIS”) announced that a new I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification Form) is available for use by employers. Because all employers are required to complete I-9 Forms for each employee hired in the United States, employers should be aware of this new development.
Under the revised form, five documents that were previously used for establishing proof of identity and employment eligibility are now no longer required. The revised list of documents which may be used for such proof includes: a U.S. passport; a Permanent Resident Card; an unexpired foreign passport with a temporary I-551 stamp; an unexpired Employment Authorization Document that contains a photograph; and an unexpired foreign passport with an unexpired Arrival-Departure record for nonimmigrant aliens authorized to work for a specific employer.
The revised form and a “Handbook for Employers, Instructions for Completing the Form I-9” are available on the USCIS’ website at: www.uscis.gov.
The lawyers and staff of Sniffen Law Firm wish you and yours a wonderful Holiday Season and a prosperous 2008.
