Terry J. Harmon presented at the Florida Capital Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators’ seminar titled, “Gender Identity and the Law – An Update on Transgender and Gender Identity Issues in the Public and Private Sectors.” Presentation topics focused on gender identity and transgender legal issues in education and employment. The seminar was held October 13, 2016 at the Florida State University College of Law.

We are especially proud of Jeff Slanker on being named as a Rising Star for Super Lawyers in 2016. Mr. Slanker has extensive experience in all aspects of Labor and Employment and Wage and Hour Law. He also practices in the areas of State and Local Government Law, Constitutional Law, Civil Rights Defense, and Education Law. Mr. Slanker is active in numerous professional organizations. He is a member of the Florida Bar’s Labor and Employment Law Section and is a member of the Section’s Long Range Planning Committee and Publications Subcommittee. He is also a member of the Employer’s Counsel Network, the Defense Research Institute’s Labor and Employment, Appellate, and Local Government Law committees, the Federal Bar Association, and the Florida Defense Lawyers Association’s Labor and Employment Law Section. He publishes extensively on labor and employment and state and local government law and has authored dozens of articles on labor and employment law. He also gives lectures to trade and industry groups on labor and employment law topics.
On June 9, 2016, Terry J. Harmon presented “Transgender Student Legal Issues in School Districts” at the Florida School Boards Association’s Annual Summer Conference in Tampa, Florida.
Terry J. Harmon is now recognized by The Florida Bar as a Board Certified Specialist in Education Law. Board Certified lawyers are evaluated by The Florida Bar for experience and expertise in a particular area of law and professionalism and ethics in the practice of law. Certification is the highest level of evaluation by The Florida Bar of the competency and experience of attorneys in the areas of law approved for certification.
Terry J. Harmon presented “ESE Liability Issues, Current Trends, and Best Practices” at the Florida School Boards Insurance Trusts’ Spring Meeting in Celebration, Florida, on April 20, 2016.
Terry J. Harmon has been named a Shareholder with the Firm. Since 2007, Mr. Harmon has worked with and now leads the Firm’s Education Law practice. He has represented educational institutions before the Florida Department of Education, the United States Office for Civil Rights, the Florida Division of Administrative Hearings, Florida State Circuit Courts, and Federal Courts. He has served as litigation and transactional counsel to educational institutions, including K-12 and higher education, in a variety of education law matters and has lectured on federal and state laws impacting public educational institutions. Mr. Harmon is a member of The Florida Bar’s Education Law Committee, the Florida School Board Attorneys Association, and the Education Law Association. Mr. Harmon also practices in the areas of Labor and Employment law and Administrative law.
On February 11, 2016, Sniffen & Spellman, P.A. co-produced the inaugural Florida K-12 Administrators Training in Orlando, Florida, with Stetson University College of Law and the Education Law Association. Terry J. Harmon and Monna Lea Bryant spoke at the conference on legal issues in education in the areas of Exceptional Student Education, Employment, and Social Media. On January 13, 2016, Terry J. Harmon presented “Title IX Update” at the Florida School Boards Insurance Trusts’ Winter Meeting in Celebration, Florida. The presentation addressed current case law and Office for Civil Rights investigations in the area of Title IX as applied to K-12 school districts, including transgender student-related issues.
Terry J. Harmon presented “2015 Legal Update: Title IX Sexual Violence Issues in Higher Education - A comprehensive update on 2015 higher education cases and investigations under Title IX in the area of sexual violence” at the 2015 Education Law Association Annual Conference held in Cleveland, Ohio, on November 5, 2015.
