After serving for over a decade, Michael P. Spellman has stepped down as the Chair of the Labor and Employment Law Committee of the Florida Defense Lawyers Association.

Robert J. Sniffen authored “The Proposed Overtime Rule: Why You Should Care,” published in the FSAE SOURCE magazine’s December edition.

Sniffen & Spellman, P.A. was a sponsor at the 70th Annual Florida School Boards Association conference in Tampa, Florida on December 2, 2015.  Terry J. Harmon attended on the Firm’s behalf.

Michael P. Spellman spoke at the Florida Society for Association Executives’ Education Expo about the Department of Labor’s proposed rules regulating overtime and the recent guidance issued about independent contractors. 

Robert J. Sniffen presented "Title VII and FCRA Trends" at the 41st Annual Public Employment Labor Relations Forum in Orlando.

Michael P. Spellman and Jeffrey D. Slanker co-authored “Employee Handbooks: Valuable Guides or Ticking Time Bombs?” which was published in the Fall 2015 edition of Trial Advocate Quarterly.

Kenyetta M. Mullins authored an article entitled “Overtime Wages: Changes on the Horizon,” which was published in the September/October 2015 edition of Florida Society of Association Executives SOURCE Magazine.

 

August 2015

Hetal Desai McGuire, senior attorney, was selected for Leadership Florida’s Class XXXIV.  Each year Leadership Florida selects fifty-five individuals representing business and industry, professional organizations, the public sector and non-profit organizations to participate in an eight month state-wide program learning about Florida’s unique industries, environments and challenges. Members are chosen after an intense screening process and are selected based on past service or leadership and their potential impact on the state’s future. 

Jeffrey D. Slanker wrote an article entitled Abercrombie & Fitch: Disparate Treatment Claims Do Not Require Actual Knowledge of Need for Religious Accommodation, which was published in the August 2015 Checkoff of the Florida Bar Labor and Employment Law Section.

 

July 2015

On July 10, 2015, Terry J. Harmon presented “Legal Issues Related to Bullying, Cyberbullying, and Social Media” at the Florida Association of School Administrators Professional Development Day in Niceville, Florida, for school administrators in Walton County, Florida, and Okaloosa County, Florida.

Michael P. Spellman spoke at the annual conference of the Florida Society of Association Executives (www.fsae.org) in St. Petersburg, Florida about Human Resources and Personnel issues affecting the workplace. The FSAE is the state-wide resource for information, best practices and innovations in the association community, and currently boasts over 1,000 members.

Mr. Spellman also spoke at the annual conference of the Florida Association of Self Insureds (www.fasi-fl.org) in Naples, Florida. Mr. Spellman updated the membership and attendees on developments in employment law, especially in the wake of the recent United States Supreme Court decisions and proposed rules by the Department of Labor. 

June 2015

Terry J. Harmon has been selected for inclusion on Super Lawyers’ Florida Rising Stars list for 2015 under the area of Schools & Education. No more than 2.5% of the lawyers in the State of Florida are named to this list of outstanding young attorneys. 

On June 10, 2015, Terry J. Harmon presented “Hot Legal Topics: Off-Campus Student Behavior/Title IX” to Florida school board members and superintendents at the Florida School Boards Association’s 2015 Annual Summer Conference in Tampa, Florida.

Michael P. Spellman was recently honored by the Federal Court Practice Committee as he completed his six-year term, one of which he served as Chair. The Federal Court Practice Committee serves as the Bar’s liaison to the federal courts, federal bar organizations in Florida, the Eleventh Circuit Judicial Conference, and others interested in federal practice. Mr. Spellman will continue to serve as the Florida Bar’s appointed delegate of the Northern District of Florida to the Eleventh Circuit Judicial Conference.
